“The day after a dramatic shake-up at Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward, Activision Blizzard has officially revealed its plans for the studio’s signature Call of Duty series. Two Activision Publishing executives, chief technology officer Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich “will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis.”"

It is no surprise that Infinity Ward’s name is muddy ever since the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 was castrated. However, no one has foreseen that Infinity Ward’s bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella would be fired today.

As first reported by G4, it seems that a number of security guards which are “bouncer-liked”, marched to IW’s offices unannounced. The guards refused to comment on what they were up to and provided no information about their presence.

Moments later, Jason West made an update on his own Facebook which looks like this:

Activision has also filed an SEC form against IW earlier today, citing a HR investigation into the alleged “breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward.”

As of this moment, no one knows what is the reason behind Activision’s firing of the heads of one of their more valuable development outfits besides “breach of contract” and “insubordination”.

More info will be available as soon as more pieces of the puzzle come together.

For those interested, here is the SEC filling Activision made to IW

“Getting mad at Activision for this kind of thing is like getting mad at an ape for throwing feces, it’s just how the beast communicates.” – Tim Schafer

Update:
It is confirmed that IW CEO and Studio Head Vince Zampella is no longer working for IW.

Based on Zampella’s LinkedIn page, his working status is now TBD (to be decided), which confirms that he is no longer with IW.

On the other side of the spectrum, it seems that Activision has big (read: more releases) plans for the Call Of Duty franchise.

According to Kotaku , Activision has annouced that they will form a “dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world.” They intend to expand the brand “with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit” while placing focus on “high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models.”

As of now, it is yet to be known if the departure of both Heads of IW will effect the development/release of Modern Warfare 3. However, Treyarch and newcomer Sledgehammer Games will also be developing their own respective games for the CoD franchise, with Treyarch’s game coming out later this year while Sledgehammer’s will be released sometime in the future. Also known is that there will be a CoD game coming out in 2011 which is developed by a yet-to-be-named development studio.

RockPaperShotgun: And… Shank. Tell us about it. What were its origins? What are you trying to accomplish with it? What are you most pleased about it? What nags?

Jamie Cheng: Jeff (Agala, Creative Director) and I created the concept while working on our previous game. Right from the outset, we wanted to bring some old school gameplay but also make sure it was supported with the best animation and visuals we could muster.

The story that comes to mind is one that came up again and again at PAX. People would tell me they loved the way the game looks — and then they started playing, and realized they had a ton of control over Shank’s moves. The animation worked so well it looked canned. Those were by far the most satisfying comments.

The pacing of the game is hugely important to us, and I think we all agreed the pacing of the enemy encounters was the weakest portion of our demo. This is something we’ve been addressing, and so far we’re quite pleased with the results. I can’t wait to get more hands on this game…
